CONSERVATIVE MP BACKS HOUSE REFORMS

Hugh Robertson, has welcomed reforms to the Parliamentary calendar and working hours.

Hugh Robertson has welcomed reforms to the Parliamentary calendar and working hours. The reforms, which come before the House on Tuesday, are part of a programme drawn up by The Modernisation Committee.

Hugh Robertson Said: "I particularly welcome reforms to the Parliamentary calendar that will see the House sit in September. During both the summer recesses since I have been elected, I have been approached by constituents with issues to raise and it is ridiculous that, under the current system, this cannot be done between late July and mid October.

"I also thoroughly welcome plans to alter the working hours so that the House sits from 11.30 until 7.00pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The current hours of 2.30 - 10.00pm are antiquated and do not fit modern media schedules. I would actually support the House starting even earlier so that more time is available for Parliamentary debate.
